PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for adjusting a refresh rate for power savings.

SOLUTION: A display is refreshed at a first vertical refresh rate in a first mode of operation 102, and horizontal lines of the display are selectively refreshed in a second mode of operation 104, while using the same pixel and line clock signal utilized for refreshing the display at the first rate. A transition between the first mode of operation 102 and the second mode operation 104 is signaled by a graphics processor utilizing at least one synchronization signal. The refresh rate in the second mode 104 is less than the first refresh rate for reducing power required by the display.
