<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape drive device for reducing the adhesion of a magnetic tape and a magnetic head. <P>SOLUTION: The transfer speed of the magnetic tape 6 declines to a reference speed when stopping the transfer of the magnetic tape 6, a lubricant existing in an interface between the magnetic head 1 and the magnetic tape 6 can be excluded to the outside from the interface by displacing the magnetic head 1 in the direction of the width of the magnetic tape 6. A meniscus portion between the magnetic head 1 and the magnetic tape 6 decreases by excluding the lubricant when the magnetic tape 6 is stopped, and friction between the magnetic head 1 and the magnetic tape 6 can be reduced because an adhesive force generated between the magnetic head 1 and magnetic tape 6 can be reduced.
