PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent oil pressure from becoming excessive in at least either an oil chamber for a plunger or an oil chamber for lock release, in a hydraulic tensioner which includes: the plunger, which presses a transmission band, supported on a tensioner housing so as to be movable in the axial direction, and one end of which faces the oil chamber for the plunger formed in the tensioner housing; and a lock mechanism, which is arranged in the tensioner housing in such a way that the movement restraint and release of the restraint of the return side of the plunger are changed over according to the oil pressure change in the oil chamber for lock release formed in the tensioner housing. SOLUTION: Oil pressure of at least one of the oil chamber 48 for the plunger and the oil chamber 57 for lock release is relieved at predetermined or higher pressure through a relief valve 63.
