The shaft (60) has an adjusting unit for adjusting diameter of a surface of the shaft to be wound in a reduced-diameter unused position and an expanded operating position. The winding surface is formed with a uniform curvature without joints in the expanded position and inwardly supported against operational pressure in a uniform and dimensionally stable manner in the unused position. A winding shaft sleeve (61) is made of plastic i.e. polyurethane with a mixture of natural rubber, and support elements (63) are made of glass fiber reinforced or carbon fiber reinforced plastic. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a winding shaft.
