Water circulation in cooling jackets 1 for a shaft furnace or a gas producer is improved by providing vertical partitions 6 dividing the jackets into two chambers, feeding water from a drum 3 through a downcomer 2<SP>11</SP> into one end of the outer cooler chamber and taking the water off through a riser 2<SP>1</SP> at the same end of the inner, more highly heated chamber. Connection between the two chambers is provided by terminating the partition 6 short of the opposite end of the jacket to that at which the water pipes are disposed. The partition may be disposed to give a wider inner chamber as shown. The jackets 1 are disposed in opposite walls, Fig. 3 (not shown), or may form a U-shape, Fig. 5 (not shown). |
