The device (8) has an operating element (11) positioned on a functional plate i.e. cooktop plate, of a cooktop (1) in a removable manner. The element is rotatable around a longitudinal axis (A) and tiltable relative to a surface (3) of the plate for adjusting operating conditions of the cooktop in a condition in which the element is positioned on the plate. The element is formed with an angular circumference contour with sides (11a-11d). Another operating element (12) is designed with an edge-free circumference contour and arranged at a distance to the former element. An independent claim is also included for a household appliance for preparing food comprising cooking zones.
