PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modifying a polyolefin, useful for primers that significantly improve the adhesion of paints to a polyolefin surface. SOLUTION: The method includes: forming a solution by dissolution of a polyolefin in a solvent not containing benzylic hydrogens or secondary hydrogens; forming a reactive mixture by addition, to the solution, of unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydrides, unsaturated carboxylic acids or unsaturated carboxylic acid esters, and a radical initiator; and forming a modified polyolefin by reaction of the reactive mixture under a condition suitable for completion of forming a modified polyolefin.
