Alcohols containing esters as impurities are purified by treatment with an alcoholic solution of an alkali metal hydroxide at an elevated temperature. The esters present are split and the resulting mixture may be washed with water and the pure alcohol obtained by distillation. It is advantageous if the alcoholic alkaline solution is prepared with the same alcohol which is to be purified. The process may be carried out at temperatures between 50 DEG and 300 DEG C., preferably between 100 DEG and 200 DEG C. The process is particularly applicable to alcohols having 6-19 carbon atoms obtained by the oxo synthesis. |
