The internal combustion engine (10) is limited by walls (16,18,20) and has inner space filled with a medium, in which a pressure prevails during operation of the internal combustion engine. A protective device (23) is provided with fluidic communicating inner space and flow throughable by the mediums, which is closed below a predetermined threshold value of the pressure and opens after exceeding the threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating internal combustion engine.
