<p>Linear, high molecular weight unbranched amorphous copolymers of ethylene and butene-1 are prepared by using a catalyst obtained by contacting a hydrocarbon-soluble compound of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa with an organometallic compound of Group I or IIa or of aluminium and which if used for the homopolymerization of butene-1 would produce a linear amorphous homopolymer.
