Vanadium-based hard coating for a wind turbine component

The wind power plant comprises a mechanical component (10) such as a tower, a pod, a rotor hub, a rotor blade, a drive, a drive element, a brake, a rotation shaft, or generator having a surface (12) made of steel (11). The steel surface of the component is coated with a vanadium-based hard material layer (13) made of vanadium aluminum nitride or vanadium oxide. The thickness (14) of the hard material layer is set ranging from 10 nm to 100 mu m or from 10 nm to 10 mu m. An independent claim is included for method of improving surface characteristics of mechanical component of wind power plant.
