PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bending moment sensor directly detecting a bending moment with a simple constitution, while maintaining a strength and reliability with respect to sensitivity comparable to those of conventional torque sensors, and also to provide an operation handle of simple structure using the sensor. SOLUTION: The bending moment sensor 1 is equipped with: two magnetostrictive objects 2 to be stuck to the surface of a measuring object 1a with their positions shifted from each other so as to detect the direction of a bending moment generated in the measuring object 1a; two coils 3 each for exciting each of the magnetostrictive objects 2 individually and detecting a change in magnetostriction; and yokes 4 each for forming a magnetic path for a magnetic field generated by each coil 3. In the magnetostrictive objects 2, a plurality of slits 21 parallel to one another are formed in the direction of their expansion and shrinkage caused by the bending moment applied to the measuring object 1a. Each of these components is fixed to the surface of the measuring object 1a and is covered by a protective member not shown by the figure, and signals from the coils 3 are output through current terminals 3a, 3b of the individual coils.
