PURPOSE: A cosmetic composition containing lactone compounds is provided to suppress melanogenesis without cytotoxicity. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for skin whitening contains lactone compounds of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. The lactone compound is 1-O-acetyl-4R,6S-britannilactone of chemical formula 2. The lactone compound is 1-hydroxy-4R,6S-britannilactone of chemical formula 3. The compounds are isolated from Inula britannica var. linariifolia (Turcz.) Regel. A cosmetic composition for skin whitening contains the lactone compounds of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient.
