A rotary vacuum filter for sludge comprises a perforated drum A mounted on a rotating shaft A1 and divided into four compartments by radial walls, Fig. 1, a plurality of endless tapes, or cords, b extending around the drum A and drums b1, b2, and a plurality of vibrating rollers B which compress the sludge collected by the cords b from a trough C. The moisture expelled from the sludge is sucked into the drum. The rollers B may be vibrated against the action of spring d', Fig. 3, by an electrically operated vibrator D3. Alternatively, the rollers may be vibrated by pistons actuated by fluid, e.g. air, and attached to both ends of each roller, Fig. 2 (not shown), the flow of fluid to cylinders containing the pistons is controlled by a cam operated valve, flow regulators and pressure reducing valves. Suction is applied to the drum through apertures a1, a stationary chamber a3, Fig. 3, provided with seals as shown, and a pipe a2. Deliquidified sludge is discharged from the tapes b into a receptacle C1.
