PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder which lessens an incorrect detection in the presence or absence detection of the ink in an ink tank 1 in the recorder, and an ink presence or absence detecting method using the recorder. SOLUTION: The recorder 100 is arranged between a recording head and the ink tank and has an ink presence or absence detector 11 capable of circulating the ink in the inside and changing the volume corresponding to the ink pressure. The recorder 100 can adjust the ink volume which is supplied to the recording head from the ink tank. The recorder 100 determines that there is some ink in the ink tank 1 when the volume of the ink presence or absence detector 11 becomes a predetermined threshold or more while determining that there is no ink in the ink tank when the volume becomes less than the threshold. The recorder 100 adjusts the feed amount of ink so that the ink circulating in the ink presence or absence detector 11 may have the pressure which makes the volume of the ink presence or absence detector 11 exceed the threshold when some ink is in the ink tank in determining the presence or absence of ink.
