A crank-shaft has at least one crank-pin 2 with a hardened peripheral layer 11 the volume of which is greater on the side 13 nearer the shaft axis 12. The hardened layer may be thicker and/or wider on the shaft axis side and may extend into the web radius. The hardening is performed by electro-inductive heating on a revolving or stationary shaft to prevent distortion and the heating may be varied by control of the inductive current, by varying the gap between the pin and the inductors or by varying the size of the inductor by laminar iron stacks.
