PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide colloidal silica useful as an ink absorbing filler for printing paper, a spreadability improver of paint, a hydrophilic coating material of various material surfaces, a high strength binder, a catalyst binder, an abrasive material for electronic materials, etc. SOLUTION: The colloidal silica produced using activated silicic acid as a raw material in the presence of potassium ions contains potassium ions and contains a group of nonspherical deformed silica particles having a major to minor axis ratio of 1.2-10 as observed with a transmission electron microscope. The colloidal silica can be produced through the steps of preparing an aqueous solution of activated silicic acid by bringing an aqueous solution of an alkali silicate into contact with a cation exchange resin; adding a compound as a potassium ion source and an alkali agent to the aqueous solution of activated silicic acid to make the solution alkaline; forming silica particles by heating; and growing the silica particles by a buildup method.
