The method involves generating a reference value for coupling torque generated by an internal combustion engine. An actual value of loss torque of the engine is determined. Control variables (S-K, S-L, S-Z) for controlling the engine are determined based on the reference value of the coupling torque and the actual value such that inner torque of the engine includes torque requirement resulting from the sum of the values. A measure for operational performance of the engine is determined, where the actual value is determined based on the measure for the operational performance.
