PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine provided with a variable valve train, which immediately increases engine speed without deteriorating ignitability during starting of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This control device for the internal combustion engine provided with the variable valve train includes: an intake variable valve train 40 changing the valve opening characteristics of an intake valve; and an exhaust variable valve train 42 changing the valve opening characteristics of an exhaust valve. After initial explosion occurs in starting, in order to increase the amount of internal EGR gas, the opening timing of the intake valve is advanced, and also the lift and working angle of the intake valve are increased. During the subsequent starting, when a cylinder inner wall temperature is higher than a predetermined wall temperature threshold, the opening timing of the exhaust valve is advanced to increase exhaust efficiency.
