PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for reducing amount of generated gas capable of simply reducing amount of nitrous oxide gas generated from a nitrification tank at a low cost on the basis of an unprecedented idea to accelerate a denitrification reaction in the nitrification tank. SOLUTION: The system S for reducing the amount of generated gas which reduces the amount of nitrous oxide gas G generated from sewage W in an aerobic tank 2 for a sewage treatment using microorganisms includes: a gas concentration sensor 6 for detecting the concentration of the nitrous oxide gas G generated from the sewage W in the aeration tank 2; a methanol supply device 4 for supplying methanol M to the sewage W; and a computer 5 for controlling the amount of the methanol M to be supplied to the sewage W in the aeration tank 2 according to the variation of the concentration measured by the gas concentration sensor 6.
