A plurality of sensor electrodes (10) are formed on a region overlapping a display panel (8), and the capacitance of each changes according to a contact state of a user. In addition, a proximity sensor-use electrode pair (12) is formed by transparent electrodes in a region overlapping the display panel. A capacitance detection circuit (20) detects changes in capacitance of each of a plurality of sensor electrodes (10) corresponding to contact of the user, and thus detects the position with which the user has made contact. A proximity detection circuit (30) detects changes to the electric field between the proximity sensor-use electrode pair (12) caused by the proximity of the user, and thus detects when the user comes into proximity with the display panel. At least a portion of the capacitance detection circuit (20) is configured to be switchable between an operational state and a non-operational state, and that portion switches from the non-operational state to the operational state upon detection by the proximity detection circuit (30) that the user has come into proximity.
