<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic control device for an automatic transmission constituted to prevent excessive rise of line pressure. <P>SOLUTION: When in the reverse range, a manual valve 21 blocks the output of a forward range pressure, and switches the gain of a primary regulator valve 22 from less than one to one or more, and switches a spool 27p of a C-2 relay valve 27 to the left half position. When the C-2 relay valve 27 is in the left half position, the communication between an input port 27c and an output port 27e is blocked, and an input port 27d and the output port 27e are communicated with each other, so as to allow modulator pressure to be supplied to an input port SLC2a of a linear solenoid valve SLC2 through oil paths d, e.
