PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a high-purity separated product of a nacreous layer to be produced from an abalone shell without manual operation.

SOLUTION: The method for separating the nacreous layer from the abalone shell includes heating the abalone shell, rapidly cooling the heated shell by soaking the shell in water to cause crack between the nacreous layer and the prismatic layer, soaking the resultant shell in an acidic solution to decompose and remove calcium carbonate constituting the prismatic layer at the cracked part, and separating the nacreous layer from the abalone shell.
