<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin backlight unit which simultaneously achieves area dimming, increased intensity, high efficiency of light utilization, intensity evenness even with a side light system. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight unit includes at least one or more light sources, light guide plates for applying light from the light source on a liquid crystal surface, and a chassis for fixing the light source and light guide plate, and is structured by arraying a plurality of light guide plates.
