PURPOSE: A cutting insert is provided to facilitate the discharge of chips by the formation of multi-stage steps or a nick on a main cutting edge since cut chips are crushed. CONSTITUTION: A cutting insert(100) comprises an upper surface(110a), a lower surface, main and sub sides(120,130), an edge side(140), and main and sub cutting edge units(300,400). A chip breaker(180) is formed on the upper and lower surfaces. The main and sub sides connect both sides and both ends of the upper and lower surfaces. The edge side connects sub sides adjacent to the main side. The upper and lower surfaces contact the main side so the main cutting edge unit is formed. The upper and lower surfaces contact the sub side so the sub cutting edge unit is formed. The main cutting edge unit has multiple discontinuous lines or curves. The cutting chip is cut by the main cutting edge unit.
