PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material separation and detection apparatus capable of reliably detecting presence/absence of a small piece material which is suspended in an inclined condition from a base material. SOLUTION: The material separation and detection apparatus 3 detects separation of small piece materials G4 connected to a base material W via micro-joint parts A1-A4, and has a carriage 13 which is reciprocable in the direction parallel to one side of the base material W in a vicinity of the one side of the base material, and detectors 15, 17 which are provided on the carriage 13 to detect the presence of the small piece materials G4 in the direction across the one side. Since the detectors 15, 17 are provided so as to move below the base material W, the material separation detection apparatus 3 can detect presence/absence of the small piece materials G4 not completely separated from the base material W and suspended by the base material W.
