Disclosed is a lithium secondary battery characterized in that: the battery is equipped with a negative electrode having a negative electrode collector and a negative electrode layer containing a negative electrode active substance formed on the surface of the collector; the negative electrode layer is configured with a negative electrode active substance layer, which is primarily composed of a negative electrode active substance, and an insulation layer that is formed on the negative electrode substance layer and primarily composed of an insulating filler; the ratio (Sb/Sa) of a pore specific surface area (Sb:m2/g) of the insulation layer with respect to a pore specific surface area (Sa:m2/g) of the negative electrode active substance layer, as measured by a mercury porosimeter, being 1.2 = (Sb/Sa) = 2.5.
