<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of suppressing the deterioration of contrast to caused by an influence of return light generated in a liquid crystal panel while improving the durability and heat resistance of a polarizing element at the light exit side. <P>SOLUTION: In the projector, first and second polarizing elements 42a-42c, 43a-43c are formed of inorganic materials so that a light modulating part 40 has excellent light resistance and heat resistance. Thus, a life of a projector 100 can be elongated. Furthermore, the first polarizing elements 42a-42c are disposed with gradients to a reference surface vertical to the optical axis of an illuminating optical system 20, whereby the return light to the first polarizing elements 42a-42c generated in the liquid crystal panels 41a-41c at the subsequent stage of the first polarizing elements 42a-42c and in the second polarizing elements 43a-43c is displaced to the outside of the projector 100 by reflection.
