Use of at least one copolymer or its salts comprising at least one substituted ethylene unit of formula (-CR 1>R 2>-CR 3>(-[CH 2] m-[C(=O)] n-[W 1>] q-[R 4>-O-] r-R 5>)-) (I) or (-CR1aR2a-CR3a(-[CH 2] m-C(=O)-[W 1>] q-[R 4>-O-] r-R 8>)-) (II) as water reducing agent in hydraulic binders, where the copolymer has a molecular weight of 10000-400000 Daltons, and the copolymer contains no crosslinking units, is claimed.
