The method involves estimating quantity of oxygen consumed in a particle filter (4) by estimating incoming and outgoing oxygen flow rates in the particle filter, and diagnosing occurrence of combustion in the particle filter. Intensity of the combustion is estimated. An oxidation catalyst (3) is placed in upstream of the particle filter. Injected fuel flow rate of a combustion engine (1) is evaluated. An independent claim is also included for a method for diagnosing deterioration of a particle filter of an exhaust line of a combustion engine of an automobile.
