The method involves determining an actual position of a towing vehicle (1) with a trailer (2) and determining stationary obstacles (3) and lateral roadway borders (4) from provided digital map data for a driving route. Ranges are determined within the lateral roadway borders by determining tractrix curves of a rear axle of the vehicle. A warning signal is sent, and/or guidance interference is carried-out when a wheel of a front axle of the vehicle is approximated to one of the ranges. An independent claim is also included for a device for warning a driver before collisions with stationary obstacles on a driving route lying ahead.
