PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for compensating the backlight of an image are provided to enable accurate and automatic compensation for the backlight of an image by detecting the backlight. CONSTITUTION: A camera unit(101) photographs an image, and an image processing unit(103) compensates the backlight of an image by adjusting the brightness of a backlight image. A storage unit(105) stores the image and the compensated backlight. The image processing unit applies a HIST parameter to each pixel to judge whether or not the image is the backlight image.
