PURPOSE: A method for providing position information and an image pickup apparatus applying the same are provided to extract information of a building, and displays the extracted the building information with the photographed image. CONSTITUTION: A photographing apparatus photographs an image(S220). The photographing apparatus extracts one or more buildings from the photographed image(S230). The photographing apparatus confirms the existence of a map(S260). Based on detected coordinate information, and a direction and distance information, the photographing apparatus decides the location of the building on the map(S263). The photographing apparatus extracts the building information of the calculated position, and displays the building location information with the photographed image(S266,S280).
