PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a parking space recognition device having improved accuracy of recognizing a parking space even when a horizontal wide angle sonar is used. SOLUTION: When a plurality of parking vehicle detection parts La are arranged in a parking area detection line L, the parking space recognition device sets a virtual center point E of each parking vehicle and also sets a virtual parking position 11a, on a coordinate plane. The parking space recognition device calculates a shortest distance parallel to an X-axis between the virtual parking positions 11a, 11a, decides that there is a parking space S between the virtual parking positions 11a, 11a when the shortest distance is a general parking width or above, and displays the presence of the parking space S on a monitor.
