PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element capable of preventing degradation of electron injection efficiency into a luminescent layer. SOLUTION: This organic EL element including a positive electrode 102, a transparent negative electrode 108, and an organic luminescent layer 105 formed between the positive electrode 102 and the transparent negative electrode 108 includes: an electron transport layer 106 formed between the transparent negative electrode 108 and the organic luminescent layer 105 and formed of an organic substance containing at least either of an alkaline metal and an alkaline earth metal; and a metal oxide layer 107 formed between the electron transport layer 106 and the transparent negative electrode 108 and containing aluminum oxide.
