The method involves rotating a gas mixture (2) in a cylindrical centrifuge drum (16) by motor power. A gas portion of a heavy gas component (32) is blocked in an axial direction and directly passed into a space in inner side (a) of an outwardly lying cylinder (27) with respect to constructive measures. A high concentration gas portion of a lighter gas component (33) is guided into a region in immediate vicinity of an outer wall (b) of an inwardly lying cylinder (24) so that the separated gas components are not mixed during transition of the gas portions over cylinder boundaries. An independent claim is also included for a centrifuge for performing a method for separating a heavy component from a gas mixture.
