A method or means suitable for removing energy from a superconducting magnet comprises the steps of: connecting a run-down load 28 across the magnet; opening a superconducting switch to divert current flowing in the magnet through the run-down load 28; rapidly absorbing the heat energy, generated by the run-down load 28 in response to the current flowing though it, in a material 40 and allowing the material 40 to slowly dissipate the said heat energy. The use of a material 40 to remove heat energy in such a manner allows a light weight, compact, heat removal system to be used in a portable superconducting magnet maintenance system. The material 40 may be paraffin wax or ceramic bricks heated by a diode 28 or resistor arrangement. The paraffin wax may provide a phase changing heat transmission arrangement where the material changes between solid and liquid phases. The heat removal process may be assisted by cooling fin 42 and fan 44 driven air arrangements.
