PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emergency time brake device of a passenger conveyor for safely operating a main shaft brake device at rising operation. SOLUTION: The emergency time brake device of the passenger conveyor includes: a speed detecting device 9 positioned in an upper machine room of the passenger conveyor and detecting a speed by the rotation of a main shaft 4 of a footstep drive wheel 7 wound with a footstep chain 6; an interposingly-pressing disk 10 fixed to the main shaft of the footstep drive wheel 7; a lever brought into pressure-contact by being sandwiched by an annular interposingly pressing disk 13 fastened in the circumferential direction via a plurality of places of springs, having an annular ratchet 15 for fixing an annular friction material 14 to both surfaces and rockingly held so as to be engaged with and released from the ratchet 15; and an electromagnetic coil for rocking the lever. The rocking of the lever at the rising operation of the passenger conveyor is performed by the magnetization or demagnetization of the electromagnetic coil when the speed detecting device 9 detects a speed to be zero or a predetermined crawling speed.
