The method involves determining a measured axle drive ratio by summing number of measured values. An axle drive ratio is determined as that of number of a pre-determined axle drive ratio that lies next to the measured axle drive ratio. Value of the pre-determined axle drive ratio is decremented during incrementing another value of the pre-determined axle drive ratio. The axle drive ratio is determined from individual axle drive ratios that are determined from the pre-determined axle drive ratios.
