Disclosed is a hydrogen generating material which is stable in the atmosphere, or the like. Specifically disclosed is a hydrogen generating material which contains Mg nanoparticles the surfaces of which are slowly oxidized, and generates hydrogen when the slowly oxidized Mg nanoparticles are reacted with water. Also disclosed are: the hydrogen generating material wherein the specific surface area of the Mg nanoparticles is less than 70 m2/g but more than 3 m2/g; the hydrogen generating material which additionally contains a metal powder that has a standard electrode potential larger than that of Mg in the positive direction; and a method for producing the hydrogen generating material, which comprises at least the following step (i) and step (ii). (i) a step in which Mg nanoparticles are obtained by arc melting an Mg metal ingot in an atmosphere of hydrogen, nitrogen, Ar or a mixed gas thereof (ii) a step in which the surfaces of the Mg nanoparticles are slowly oxidized |
