PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the cause of a crack made during molding of a ring and provide a wire for the piston ring having no crack. SOLUTION: The wire for the piston ring is the material for the piston ring installed in a ring groove in a piston outer periphery. In the wire for the piston ring, residual stress before the ring molding in a side forming the outer periphery by the ring molding, in particular in a sliding part of the outermost periphery, has compression stress, preferably compressive residual stress of 30-80 MPa. Particularly, a cross-sectional shape typified by a two piece type oil ring is useful for an almost I shaped or an almost H shaped wire. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
