The machine has opposite needle beds (4, 4') and needles longitudinal shiftably arranged in the needle beds. A lower retaining plate (1) is attached to each needle and adjustably arranged between a closed position and an opened position by pivoting. The retaining plate has a planar retaining area (11) that is provided below a lower side of the associated needle in the closed position of the retaining plate. An angle between the retaining plate and a plane (NG') defined by the lower side of the needles amounts to 10 degrees.
