PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authoring apparatus and authoring method for easily creating, from prepared video content data, data to reproduce a video content and to be stored in an optical disk, by applying chapters intended by a user. SOLUTION: The authoring apparatus includes: a face image indexing information acquiring module 301 which extracts a plurality of face images from moving image data included in the video content; a face indexing information storing/displaying module 302 which stores/displays face indexing information; a chapter information generating module 303 which generates chapter information; a menu information data creating module 304 which creates menu information data; a conversion module 305 which creates data to be written onto the optical disk 320; and a write processing module 306 which writes the data onto the optical disk 320.
