Polymerization reactor (1) for the continuous polymerization, comprises: at least a stirrer tank (2) and/or a loop reactor as a first polymerization stage; and at least a tubular reactor (5) as a second polymerization stage, where the tubular reactor exhibits installations (6), such that speed profile of the flow through liquid over the cross-section of the tubular reactor is moderate. Independent claims are included for: (1) a polymerization device for the polymerization of a biodegradable, intermolecular cyclic diester of an alpha -hydroxycarboxylic acid of formula (I), comprising the polymerization reactor and at least a cleaning device for cleaning (I); and (2) a process for preparing the biodegradable polyester and/or copolyester by ring opening polymerization of (I), comprising (a) feeding a mixture comprising (I) into the first polymerization stage of the device and pre-polymerizing; and (b) transferring the obtained prepolymer into the second polymerization stage of the device and carrying out the polymerization reaction.
