The strut (10) has a shock absorber (12) supported at a vehicle bodywork and a wheel guiding element. A carrier spring (14) is assigned to the shock absorber and engaged at an adjusting spring plate (34) that is adjustable between an upper limit stop (24) and a lower limit stop (40a). An energy absorbing damping element is switched among the adjusting spring plate and the limit stops. A recess is formed in stop surfaces of the adjusting spring plate and/or the limit stops. The damping element is arranged in the recess, and extends over the stop surfaces in an unloaded condition.
