<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology keeping a catalyst in an active state while suppressing deterioration of fuel economy by maintaining expansion ratio control as high as possible, in a high-expansion-ratio internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: When it is determined that an exhaust emission control catalyst in the active state cannot keep the active state in normal high expansion ratio control based on the temperature and deteriorated state to be detected or estimated of the exhaust emission control catalyst during the idle operation of the internal combustion engine (No in S104), the high expansion ratio control increasing an effective compression ratio in comparison with the normal high expansion ratio control is performed (S105). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
