PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steam compression refrigerator system capable of forming a cooling tower free-cooling circuit capable of sufficiently coping with a high-temperature cooling load such as a large load exceeding 1,000 w/m<SP>2</SP>. SOLUTION: The steam compression refrigerator system includes: a bypass pipe 69 for connecting a cold water return pipe 41 and a condenser 46; and a communication pipe 65 with a large diameter having a forced pump 68 in parallel with a communication pipe 63 for connecting an evaporator 35 and the condenser 46. When a measurement value by an external wet-bulb thermometer 73 exceeds a predetermined value, a Roots compressor 50 is operated to perform refrigerating cycle operation. When the measurement value by the external wet-bulb thermometer 73 is not higher than a predetermined value, the compressor 50 is stopped and a forcibly-circulating pump 68 in the second communication passage 65 is driven to perform free cooling operation.
