The device has a control and evaluation unit to receive supradental pressure as function of time and to analyze functional dependency of the supradental pressure and respiratory volume. The functional dependency of the supradental pressure and the respiratory volume is determined for a time interval. A measure for excellence of linear functional dependency of the supradental pressure and the respiratory volume fulfills predetermined swelling criteria. Elastance or compliance in determined time intervals is determined from rise of the supradental pressure based on the respiratory volume. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatically operating a respiratory device.
