The filter element comprises a plate-shaped container with a flow connection (21) for a water feed, and with a return flow port (23) for return water, and a filter substrate for biological processing of water flowing from flow connection to return flow port in the container. The container has successive layers in a first direction vertically to a plain with a large cross-section of the container, where the layers comprise a distribution area (25), a filter area (29) and a collection area (35), which extend over large cross-section and are formed in first direction.
