PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air diffuser which can optionally deflect the direction of an air bubble flow to be formed by a jet, merely by making a simple remodeling of an air diffusion pipe and also, can optionally adjust the magnitude of the membrane rocking motion and significantly enhance the cleaning effect of the membrane surface, as well as a method of operating the air diffuser and a dipping type membrane separator with the air diffuser. SOLUTION: This air diffuser (9) is applicable to the dipping type membrane separator (5) with a plurality of air diffusion pipe lines A and B. Each air diffusion pipe line A and B has at least, not less than one gas jet nozzle (92), and each gas jet nozzle (92) of the adjacent air diffusion pipe lines A and B is arranged right opposed to each other. Each nozzle tip of the normally opposed gas jet nozzles (92) is positioned so that the air bubble flow to be jetted from the nozzle tips runs into each other in a crossing state. Further, in order to make a deflective adjustment of the air bubble flows which collide crossing each other, a gas supply amount control means for controlling a gas supply amount in each fluid passage to each air diffusion pipe line A and B, is installed.
